About

What is ratgdo?

ratgdo is a WiFi enabled control board invented by Paul Wieland, sold by ratcloud llc that gives you local ESPHome / MQTT / HomeKit or dry contact control plus full status feedback for virtually any garage door opener including Security + 2.0 Chamberlain/Liftmaster openers.

Security+ 2.0 uses an obfuscated serial signal to control the door opener’s open/close and light functions, which makes it impossible to use Shelly One, Go Control, Insteon I/O linc or any other dry contact relay device to control the door.

ratgdo supports virtually all residential garage door openers made by Chamberlain, and also supports other manufacturers through dry contact control.

ratgdo is a hardware control board that wires to your door opener’s terminals. The firmware allows you to control the door over your local WiFi network and can be integrated directly with your home automation platform.

ratgdo is not a cloud device and does not require a subscription service. The firmware is open source and free for anyone to use.

Control protocols

Security + 2.0

Most door openers made by Chamberlain / Liftmaster with a yellow learn button are security + 2.0. This protocol allows ratgdo to control the door, light, lock and learn functions of the door, as well as read the physical position of the door (open, closed, etc). Three wires are used to connect ratgdo to the door opener.

Security + 1.0

Door openers with a purple learn button, and some with a red learn button support a digital communication protocol that allows control over basic functions as well as for reading the door's physical position. Requires a compatible wall control panel or no control panel at all.

Security +1.0 requires an 889LM / 041A7928-3MC wall control panel. If you do not have an 889LM / 041A7928-3MC, ratgdo offers an emulation mode but it will interfere with your wall control’s functions. dry contact control mode can be used with security +1.0 openers as a fall back.

Dry Contact

Many garage door openers can be controlled by dry contacts, or momentary switches (such as a door bell) for basic door control. All Chamberlain purple or red button openers work with this control method, as well as many other manufacturers such as Genie.

Commercial openers and gates are typically controlled with dry contacts. ratgdo supports both single button control as well as discrete (three button) control where separate buttons are used for open or close. Limit switches are required for all dry contact installations. Some door / gate openers have user accissble terminals for the built in limit switches, while others will require external reed/tilt switches be installed.
